The “Al Dhafrah Grand Kingfish Championship” is an annual fishing competition organized by the Abu Dhabi Festivals and Cultural Programs Management Committee, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Representative of the Ruler in the Al Dhafrah Region. Held at Al Mirfa Beach in the Al Dhafrah region, the championship consists of three main tournaments: the “Delma Championship,” the “Mughira Championship,” and the “Al Dhafrah Grand Championship.” The event aims to promote traditional fishing practices, particularly kingfish (kanad) fishing, and foster a competitive spirit among enthusiasts. The championship offers over 2 million dirhams in prizes, divided between male and female participants. It also seeks to highlight the UAE’s maritime heritage and the scenic coasts and islands of the Al Dhafrah region. Participants are required to follow traditional fishing methods like “Al-Lifah” (casting with a rod), with strict safety and environmental guidelines.
